The National Quantum Initiative Supplement to the President’s FY 2025 Budget Released

NQI Annual Report FY2025

(December 18, 2024) Today, the National Quantum Initiative (NQI) Supplement to the President’s FY 2025 Budget was released. It is the fifth annual report on the NQI Program, as required by the NQI Act, which became Public Law 115-368 in December 2018 to accelerate American leadership in quantum information science (QIS) and technology.

In line with the National Strategic Overview for QIS, the United States is making substantial and sustained investments in QIS R&D to explore a wide range of applications and nurture a culture of discovery. The United States has invested in fundamental QIS R&D, with core efforts underway in over a dozen agencies. This report recognizes annual highlights of the entire Federal QIS R&D ecosystem and the substantial and sustained efforts funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense (DOD), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA). The U.S. Federal budgets for QIS R&D presented in the report summarize FY 2019 – FY 2023 actual expenditures, FY 2024 estimated expenditures, and FY 2025 budget requests. In addition, brief summaries of agency efforts and progress on cross-cutting QIS policy topics in science, workforce, industry engagement, and more are included.
